Lansdowne is a tranquil hill station. It is one
of the unspoilt hill stations of India and
proudly serves as a popular tourist destination
since the time of British rule. It is perched
at an elevation of 1,706 metres on a hill top.
It is renowned for its Himalayan beauty, oak
and pine forest snow covered peaks and
mesmerising fresh air.
It houses the cantonment of the4 Garhwal
Rifles of the Indian Army. It is also adorned
by some of the mystical and breathtaking views.
It is also famous for its eco-friendly tourism
revolving around mountaineering, trekking and
Lansdowne has been an ideal destination for the
tourists seeking harmonious vacation away from
the hustle-bustle of the city. It is a very
good alternative from Rishikesh. Many tourist
prefer Lansdowne more than Rishikesh in order
to avoid tourist rush. Besides scenic beauty,
the place offers tranquillity and antiquity of
the British Era.
Initially, it was known as ‘Kaludanda’ village
by the locals, which literally means ‘black
hill’. However it was named after then viceroy
of India, Lord Lansdowne, he is the founder of
the place. It was established as the catering
for the Recruits Training Center of Garhwal
Rifles by the Britishers. Lansdowne used to be
the hub of all the major activities done by the
freedom fighters of the British Garhwal.
At present, it houses the command office of the
Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army. Visitors can
admire the rustic buildings, churches and old
taverns at Lansdowne which are reciting the
unheard history of pre-Independence Era.
Lansdowne is a well-known natural beauty which
resembles British era. In this place one can
get a glimpse of well preserved British
heritage bungalows and churches. It offers
fascinating views of Himalayas, with
mesmerising view of sunrise and sunset from
different view points.
